Sawadee Bangkok
We fly to Bangkok tomorrow on our way back to the UK. The last time I was there was in 1997 on my way home after a couple of months partying on Ko Phangan. After the tranquility of the islands Bangkok was a hot, dirty, smelly noisy nightmare and I was terribly disappointed by the famous Khao San Road. It turned out to be a short street filled with backpackers hostels selling cheap beer and playing pirated Hollywood videos. This time I am being collected at the airport and whisked off to our 4 star hotel the Indra Regent which is right in the heart of the Pratunam Market. I am packing light, practising my Thai and brushing up my bartering.

A successful 3some
We broke even by 1.00 which was a huge relief. You have to put on parties for the love not the money - but it's nice not to know we didn't have to pay people out of our own pockets at the end of the night. It's a hard road promoting - 8 weeks of your life for one night of madness, followed by a week swearing you'll never do it again. And then you see the photos and relive the memories and know that you will.
Our thanks to Apollo and Andi at Hardhouse, Claire and Gargoyle at Twisted and Dave Cogan at NZRave for taking some lush photos

UPFM
![]() | Well what can I say about 3Some except that it went right off, and it's taken me a week to recover. The crowd were fantastic and everyone seemed to be grinning all night. We proved that you don't have to play hard house all night to keep an Auckland crowd cranking, and DJ Maya won over some hardcore hardhouse heads with a sublime techno set. The Filterbrats live set was seriously funky and I loved the last hour from RP. |

Spiderjarra
It's the day before 3Some. Justin Sane & Dodgy Sam have come up with a competition to suggest the best idea for body-painting Jarra the station director of Up FM. He's protesting furiously but he will get daubed on the night. Suggestions are ranging from a Smurf, an elephant, something out of Thundercats, a zebra, the Pink Panther, Pacman, an Oompa Loompa, a green alien, and Spiderman. Here's what he eventually looked like.

Spot the Scalpel
These days I get most of my news from online communities and blogs. I gave up on the mainstream news after it completely lost credibility with the 'reporting' of the Iraqi War. The only reason I watch anything like CNN is to play Spot the Scalpel - where you guess what plastic surgery the newscasters have had.
The New Zealand Herald's website is very good and I always buy the bumper Weekend Herald newspaper. I also like the Sunday Star Times and have a subscription to the New Zealand Listener.I hardly ever watch TV, but love Nightline [weeknights from 10.30 on TV3]. This is nightime news with humour, witty reporting, even spoof reports taking the piss. Every night there is a feature celebrating Kiwi creativity, and they play drum & bass with the weather. However much shit is going down in the world, the last half of the evening news always celebrates something positive about New Zealand. It reminds me why I am here.

The original kick ass chicks
I watched Working Girl the other night. The opening scene has always stuck in my mind, where Melanie Griffiths changes into heels when she gets to the office. I always thought it was dumb that you couldn't wear a suit and trainers. I love Sigourney Weaver. In Alien she played one of the original kick ass chicks. My friend Shirley named her daughter Ripley, and she had the coolest pram with combat netting, extra chunky wheels and waterpistols.
It's amusing seeing some people's reaction to our brightly coloured mops. Some people look like they're sucking on a lemon, or like you're a personal affront to their sensibilities. I've even known people to cross the street! These days dreads, tattoos or piercings are the badge of a Fudged-up clubber, artist or musician. Not many muggers sport mohawks for obvious reasons.
...the suspect was reported to have had an orange mohican, tattoos, and an eyebrow ring. If you recognise this man call...

| Girls now grow up with Buffy, Xena, and Dark Angel. The only role models I had growing up were from comics and sci-fi like Ripley, Tank Girl, Durham Red, and Venus BlueGenes, from 2000AD. There were a few female punks in the British village where I grew up, and to my six year old eyes they were futuristic warrior queens. I've always been into unusual hair, and I sported a classic Tank Girl cut at my grandmother's funeral (shaved with blonde tufts at the front). | ![]() |

Back to Blighty
It will be strange going back to the UK at the end of the month. We've only been away for two years but I wonder what has changed. I know I've changed since moving here. I was a stressed out Pom when I left, and I'm going back as a laid back Kiwi. I keep reminding myself that the Bristol I have in my head may be more rose tinted than the one I actually left. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
