The Media Pen
Cathy will be interviewing the Lord of the Rings stars today. She's already seen the press premiere of the film and tomorrow she gets to stand on the red carpet in the 'media pen'. I love that expression. It makes me think of caged reporters in black tie and frocks, stabbing each other with pens or wielding mikes like clubs to get to the stars.

Before they were famous
I interviewed Lee Haslam from Tidy Trax yesterday. Lee's a lovely guy and very excited about Tidy's plans for New Zealand. He was playing at Slinky and insisted we go out and celebrate. It’s always fun to get an unexpected night out and we had a great time.

Listen to it [3.2 MB].
I always find it interesting finding out what people did before they were famous. Leeroy used to be an electrician in Trowbridge and Lee Haslam was a nursery school teacher. My strangest job was either answering phones for a brothel, working behind the bar at fetish nights [both eye opening], or being the hostess of a gameshow called Win Some Beer.

Listen to it [3.2 MB]. ![]() | I ended up chatting with Leeroy Thornhill at Slinky, about the UK acid house days and how much fun it was being a dancer in a band. You'd get people screaming when you just punched the air, the band actually had to play instruments. I used to dance in Bristol acid techno outfit MJ-12, and Leeroy was the dancer in The Prodigy. |
| We share a common hero, Bez from the Happy Mondays as our role model - so it was great when Bez ended up at my wedding reception behind the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury festival. | ![]() |

UK-Dance
I've been dipping my toes back into the waters of UK-Dance the online community where I met my husband Chelfyn. I first joined UKD about 1995 though it's been going for 11 years. Reading UK-Dace is like putting on a cosy old pair of slippers,as nothing really changes. It's loosely based around UK dance music, but often covers politics, or discussions about Favourite Snack Foods TM. Every 6 months or so someones declares that 'Trance is shit' to bait the newbies, and poses the eternal question: 'Is Knights of the Jaguar Trance or Techno?' They even did a poll on it once. The results were inconclusive.
As well as a husband, I owe a lot of very dear friends to online communities. Before we came to New Zealand on holiday in 2001, we fired off some emails to dance sites offering Chelfyn's services as a DJ. Like a blind date we met Clayton Gould and his gorgeous wife Cathy Aronson in the car park of Ellerslie racecourse. They took us to a party and introduced us to a wonderful bunch of crazy, creative, kiwis that we feel very fortunate to know.

Livving it up with Orlando
There has been much excitement at TMet Towers. Lee Haslam at Tidy UK has mailed to say he likes the ideas in One Ring though it needs more work and he’d like to meet up with us in two weeks. Tidy UK also like the footage I shot of the Tidy New Zealand launch and may put it on one of their DVDs. Clayton of course is stoked to get feedback from the label manager of Tidy Trax.
I’m so glad I’m keeping this blog for us to look back on. Life is getting rather surreal!

Blogging while blobbing
| We’ve just installed a wireless network so I’m blogging from my new Blob beanbag on the deck. I've just realised that the bird in my garden with two fluffy white bits on its throat is a Tui, New Zealand's national bird. Being so close to the Waitakere Ranges and next to a reserve we see all sorts of wildlife [especially at our parties]. Chelfyn even had a preying mantis in his studio the other day. | ![]() |

Trash to fashion
On Sunday I had a blast out to Piha to get some sea air. It had just rained and the smells of the bush were incredible. Driving through the Waitakere ranges it really hit home how much I love it here. New Zealand hooks you on so many levels - the people, the place and the peace. Being here makes my soul feels whole.
![]() | I saw a completely different type of New Zealand fashion on Friday night at the Trash to Fashion Awards. The show was complete rubbish with more colour than Versace, more crinolines that Westwood and more rubber than Gaultier. It was jawdroppingly good and there are photos of all the winners here. |
