Bro Town is a new cartoon series written by the Naked Samoans who went down well at The Edinburgh Festival last year. Bro Town is being hailed as New Zealand's version of The Simpsons, and while it may not reach those lofty heights (and who could?) it's very Kiwi and very funny.
Tonight's episode (TV3 at 8 p.m.) features Lucy Lawless and last week we had cameos from the TV3 newsreaders, the 'Maaaaarvellous' John Simpson (bless him) and Caroline Hirschfield unttering the line 'Dumb Ass P Freaks'. The school teacher is Fa'afafine, a 3rd gender they have in Samoa where sons can be brought up as girls. They can even enter Fa'afafine pageants.
Bro Town reinforces all the stereotypes. The dopey Maori, the lame ass dad, the Indian Dairy owner but it does reinforced the steretypes evenly. Nothing is sacred and this is one TV show I'm going to stay in for each week. Something I haven't done in years.
Morningside for Life! Polynesian Style.
Stay In!... Meh... screw that... I just record it on my PVR!
