The Future of Work in New Zealand

A prediction of the Future of Work in New Zealand.

'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

"Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

Wise words indeed from Steve Jobs of Apple & Pixar.

MsB's 2005 Highlights
2005 has been a fun filled year, starting off with an outdoor dance party in the South Island of New Zealand. The Full Circle was Extreme Partying to say the least, but as Billy Connelly says, there is no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothing. The people we met more than made up for the wet, and some amazing things came from our Full Circle experience. Like a chance meeting on a muddy dance floor which led to our first NZ TV appearances. A campfire produced the talented Beatnick, who is now doing a live set once a month on our radio show.

May brought the Twisted Birthday Bash celebrating a year of Twisted Radio, and their third year as an online community. It was a great chance to meet with Twisties old and new, and it's always fun to put a face to an online persona. In June I went on a Rororua roadtrip where I got to fly over White Island, and visit the Wai-o-tapu thermal area with it's boiling mud and geysers. In August we launched our live VJ Show with an 8 hour set for DV8 at The Studio. I've wanted to VJ that space for over four years, so it was wonderful to finally realise that dream. It was also an honour to meet the irrepressible Bob Harvey the mayor of Waitakere City. 2006 is going to be a great year for Waitakere creatives and you can hear all about it in my podcast interview with Bob Harvey [3.6 MB].

September's fun kicked off with the Mohawk Media crew at Kiss VJing for Yoji Biomehanika. This was followed by a small flurry of TV appearances. When you're normally behind the camera it's strange to be suddenly in the spotlight, but it was fun for a change of perspective. Chelfyn popped up on TV3 News and Campbell Live before we both appeared live on SKY TV. October's highlight for me was the interview I did with Liz Barry on Radio New Zealand. It was a chance to reflect on how talented the TMet producer team is and it was great hear music off our label on New Zealand's National radio station. It kind of validates our crazy ideas when people outside of the scene notice what we are doing.

One of the best things to come out of 2005 is being able to do our Twisted Radio shows remotely. We're going to be doing more live to air broadcasts with LIVE NZ dance & electronica acts next year, so watch this space for details. Listen out for a TMet Special on Twisted Radio on New Year's Eve. Until then Happy Holidays from TMet Recordings.

Lots of love,

MsB XX

NZ the no. 1 place for doing business

According to the World Bank's 'Doing Business in 2006' report New Zealand ranks is the number one place for 'Ease of Doing Business'. We also hold the top spot for 'Registering Property' and the number two spot for 'Dealing with Licenses'.

Creativity Support Technologies and KM

Edward De Bono, originator of the concept of lateral thinking, claims that “there are two main uses for creativity: the first use is to do what you are doing in a better way”. He says that it is important to find alternative solutions to solve problems and, in particular, it is important to find the faster, easier and, of course, less expensive one.

How green is your energy?

The Clean Energy Guide ranks each electricity company according to its impact on the climate - now and in the future. Greenpeace looked at how providers currently generate electricity, their future plans and their policies on future development of renewable energy and fossil fuels.

Podcast: An interview with Beatnick

I've just uploaded a podcast of an interview I did with Beatnick on the show last month. He talks about his inspirations, collaborations and using Ableton Live.

Listen to an interview with Beatnick. (3.5 MB)

You can catch Beatnick on the TMet Show on Twisted Radio again this Friday, beaming to you from Twisted Studio #3 out in Waitakere City. He will be joining us for a LIVE set from around 6 p.m., in the second of our monthly TMet Studio Sessions. Tune in from 5 p.m. on Auckland 107.7fm, Hamilton 107.5 fm or online at www.twisted.co.nz.

Buyer in possession

The PPSA and PPSR provide a means of securing the buyer’s obligation to pay. This scenario usually arises when goods are sold but it can also apply to services (for example, if software is being written and transfer of ownership or copyright is postponed until payment is made). In the old days, retention of title clauses had the same effect – “you do not get ownership of the goods until you pay” – but under the PPSA that does not work unless:

The buyer agrees in writing to grant the seller a security interest in the goods sold (collateral) which includes its proceeds (money).
The buyer registers that interest by filing a financing statement describing the collateral – called “perfecting the security interest”: cost $3.

Some very good advice here from Richard Osborne at Homebizbuzz.

Mohawk Media at Global Panic
I had a night off on Friday while the rest of the Mohawk Media crew went out to make eye-candy at Global Panic. Chelfyn, Gargoyle and Miz Vix, were in the visual mix creating live big screen visuals at Kiss. A good time was a had by all, and UK DJ Phil York voted it one of his best nights of the year. Considering he's been playing at the big overseas gigs that is praise indeed.

The visuals went down a storm especially the twisted 3D heads that Chelfyn made from snapshots of the Fragile crew. Some clubbers were even dancing nose to the screen for large parts of the night.

Bigups to Gavin (Shortt off NZ Rave) who went dressed as an Oompa Loompa. Kiwis may know him from the Kachingo TV ad a few years ago. Gavin is a whole heap of fun and easily makes up in personality and humour for his diminutive stature. He's always surrounded by gorgeous girls and is great fun to party with.

There's a bumper batch of photos from the night at Twisted and NZ Rave where you can also read people's verdicts in the aftermath thread.

Are you paying too much on electricity or interest?

It's that time of year again when I take some time out to sort out my filing, admin and work out if I can make any savings next year. I highly recommend the following websites for checking electricity prices and interest rates.

Powerswitch
By switching to a different plan with the same electricity supplier I have saved around $300 a year.
www.powerswitch.org.nz

Interest
By checking credit card rates I switched from a 19.25% rate to 13.25%.
