Ms Behaviour Purple

I have been on a quest to find the perfect purple hair dye for many years. A deep, luscious purple that is as near to permanent as possible. I've been loving Purple Haze from the Fudge Paintbox, but my beloved purple has been toned down in the new range just released. A change of favourite hair colour can cause major trauma but luckily you can mix up your own custom Fudge colours to design your own custom shades.

Adding some Whiter Shade of Pale creates more pastel shades that will look great with blonde hair. Or you can mix two darker colours for deeper shades, that usually take longer to wash out especially if you bleach it to white first. After a little experimentation I have come up with my very own Fudge shade, which I'm calling Ms Behaviour Purple.

Historically what was known as Tyrian purple was an expensive luxury item: "Rome, Egypt, and Persia all used purple as the imperial standard. Purple dyes were rare and expensive; only the rich had access to them. The purple colorants used came from different sources, most from the dye extraction from fish or insects. The imperial purple of Rome was based on mollusk from which purpura comes. Emperor Aurelian refused to let his wife buy a purpura-dyed silk garment, as it cost its weight in gold!" (From History, Shellfish, Royalty, and the Color Purple).

Ancient China used barium copper silicates to create Han purple. Now scientists say that Han purple may be used to develop develop advanced quantum computers (from Scientists use Han Purple to research quantum behavior).

Anyway back to my quest for the perfect purple hair dye. On the Fudge colour swatch Blueberry Hill looked promising, but on my bleached roots was more of a rich fuschia. Blue Velvet had the depth I like but lacked the richness of purple.

I got out my paintbrushes and a sheet of white paper, and after playing around with colour combinations I finally hit on my perfect purple hair dye formula:

2/3 Blueberry Hill + 1/3 Blue Velvet = MsBehaviour Purple

Remember if you're mixing your own custom hair colour then always mix up more than you'll need. Keep it in a sealed container and then use it for hairline and root touch ups. I find that the noughties Fudge formula is far longer lasting than their 90's colour range. I also mix a squirt of colour with some kick ass Fudge Dynamite every 2-3 weeks to keep my colour looking vivid.

Paintbox colours now come in see through tubes, with three groovy new shades Pink Moon, Goldfinger and Vendetta Red. You can find Fudge Paintbox colours stocked in hair salons in most major New Zealand malls. Otherwise call 0800 456 426 to find a Fudge stockist in your area or check out www.fudge.com.

Life is too short for the wrong job

"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." - Steve Jobs

It's five years to the day since I left the UK to live in NZ in instead. It was Christmas Day 1999 when I decided to move back here, after walking away from a wrong job situation. I'd always known that I'd come back to live in New Zealand one day, after growing up on tales of these halcyon islands. Where the grass really was greener, and the men looked like warriors off Xena.

I have not been disappointed on either of these things, and it has got so much more to offer than beautiful people and pristine beaches. New Zealand feels like a country full of promise. A place that's just waking up to its full potential. Every day I remind myself how lucky I am to live in this gorgeous place. But it hasn't been easy.

It's hard leaving pretty much everything you have known and loved behind. Then having to a build a new and hopefully better life. It took a plan and a lot of determination to emigrate here, but it can be done and it really is worth it. It can be hard to get your first job, and you may have to take a dramatic paycut. Just because you earned 30K in London doesn't mean you'll earn anywhere like 90K NZ whatever the current exchange rate. But you do get to live on island time near to a beach, and wake up to blue skies for the best part of nine months where I live.
