Oriental Bay

It was a glorious day in Wellington today so I celebrated finishing my judging for the Mix and Mash competition with a stroll to the beach at Oriental Bay. Every time I walk through Wellington I see something interesting and unexpected. Today it was a guy dressed in 1930s gear, playing a honky tonk piano on the back of a vintage truck on Courtney Place.

It's the first time I have taken a wander along the bays, and we walked as far as the point where I could see across the harbour to Miramar. Inspired by Mix and Mash I thought I'd look in the Creative Commons section on Flickr for pictures of Oriental Bay and found this gem from 1955 (note the weight lifters on the left).

Instead of weight lifters we were entertained by the Canadian rugby team who may have planned on an afternoon swim, but only got as far as waist deep then stood around shivering in their shorts. There were sunbathers, boats and people eating ice creams. More like the height of a British summer rather than the beginning of a Kiwi spring. Gorgeous.

I've been a faithful Fudge fan for nearly twenty years since they launched their Styling Putty which smelled like delicious marzipan. I've worked my way through their Paintbox extreme colour range and have been sponsored by Fudge NZ since I started my show on Twisted Radio back in 2004. I get a bumper box of haircare and styling products a couple of times a year and was delighted to receive my new Fudge pack in the mail this week.

My favourite items from the Fudge range are Dynamite, and 1 Shot leave in conditioner. My wavy hair hair just soaks them up, and as it grows longer it's staying glossy and soft. Two products I always take with me when I'm travelling are Hair Shaper (now in a fresh minty version) which is great in high humidity and Hair Varnish for smoothing out the frizz. I'm also liking Liquid Skrewd to coax out my curls, and the Gloss in a funky test tube is the prefect item for a high shine finish. All of them smell good enough to eat, and are available from salons across New Zealand.

A Fudge Urban range for boys and girls has been launched in Kiwi supermarkets this year, so keep an eye out for the funky orange containers or check them out on Facebook

MsBehaviour in Melbourne

I was in Melbourne for a few days last week and had a great time exploring the laneways, snapping pictures of the street art and discovering funky little shops. Melbourne is much bigger than Wellington with a population the size of New Zealand in one city. It sprawls for miles but the centre feel quite compact. I was staying on Flinders street near Federation square overlooking the Skydeck, and running a workshop for the British Council at the Arts Centre on St Kilda's Rd.

I spent a day wandering around the centre snapping up a few bargains on the way before meeting at the Pop Up Pirate radio studio for an interview. The station is based on the university campus in an old shipping container with the trasmitter on the top, and three ladders that you have to climb to get to the studio. It's one of the most quirky places I've every done a show and reminded of my old days back in the UK doing pirate radio.

In the evening I caught up with Megan from XMediaLab tapas who was in town running a Transmedia Masterclass with Jeff Gomez . It was great seeing her as we don't often get the chance to meet, as she lives in China and I live in New Zealand. The following day I ran a Creative Business Toolkit workshop for the British Council as part of the People in Your Neighbourhood Australian programme. Later on I joined a workshop with Akala from the Shakespeare Hip Hop company, with a fun session guessing whether quotes were from Shakespeare or Hip Hop tracks which is harder than you might think. Afterwards I went for a pint in an English style pub opposite Flinders station with G from Sugarlicks Recordings and Thomas from the UK charity Bottletop.

It was an early night before heading to Skills Victoria to run an Open Innovation day, before flying back to Aotearoa and a lecture at Victoria Uni the following morning. I'd like to go back to Melbourne again soon as it's an interesting place, and has just been voted the world's most liveable city for 2011.

I read Futureshock many years ago and was inspired by the vision of a future of leasing or renting items rather than buying everything. Zen Habits has A Simple Strategy for Simplifying, based on the concept of ownership becoming more fluid and less concrete.

It was this philosophy that we followed when we moved to Wellington last year. We got rid of a house and studio full of stuff, paring everything down to clothes, computers, and two cats. Our entire life fitted into a transit van and we still haven't acquired that many new things apart from some furniture. I love the feeling of freedom of having shed everything surplus to our needs, being free of just-in-case stuff, and stressful clutter. Simplifying life has made me a lot happier.

It's amazing to think that Futureshock was written over 40 years ago, and Fast Company have published Future Shock at 40: What the Tofflers Got Right (and Wrong) and a piece on their updated predictions forty years on.

When I am mentoring entrepeneurs or small companies I encourage them to look for ways to automate, delegate or outsource regular tasks. At Mohawk Media we have started using Xero to send invoices, and manage our accounts. I'm very happy to be able to get up to date financial reports with a few clicks, and feel a lot more in control over our finances.

With some help from Julie Francis at Francis Consulting it's been easy to set up and I'd recommend Xero to anyone wanting to get to grips with their accounts. If you just need a personal financial manager rather than for a business then try Pocketsmith.

May Travels

May is always a massive month for me and this year was no exception, with the annual People in Your Neighbourhood (PIYN) project and lots of travelling around New Zealand.

I started off in Auckland with a workshop for teachers from Matipo School in West Auckland. It was a gorgeous day and I was able to direct the taxi driver around the back-roads of Henderson having lived out west for seven years. I always enjoy sharing knowledge and resources with teachers, especially tools they can take back into the classroom or use to support their own studies.

Back in Wellington I met a few of the Christchurch HitLab crew from the Human Interface Technology Laboratory of New Zealand. They are working on some really exciting projects and we showed them our 3D motion capture experiments with the Kinect camera. I can't wait to go down to the HitLab to see more of their work in Christchurch.

Both Chelfyn and I were involved in the live debate at the TUANZ 25th Anniversary at Te Papa. The idea was to look back from the year 2036 as if we were twenty five years in the future. I was on team 'Positively Glowing' supporting the view that New Zealand has done well. My team-mates were Vaughn Davis of the Goat Farm, and Haydn Glass from Vodafone. On the opposing 'Miserable Bastards' side were Chelfyn, Will Marshall from Enspiral and entrepreneur Lance Wiggs. A few risque jokes had to be pulled at the last minute due to the judges being a panel of primary school children, but I managed to get a Goat C++ gag in which caused snorts from a few people.

The following day I had lunch in Auckland with the delightful Miss Phloss, who as always was a vision in pink, before a meeting at the Biz Dojo in the Ironbank Building on K'D. I was staying in the Scenic Hotel and had an early night watching property porn on the Living Channel. The reason I was in Auckland was to deliver the Creative Business Toolkit workshop at AUT that I developed as part of People in Your Neighbourhood 2011.

I had a great session with Gareth Farry from the British Council, New Zealand and over twenty creative entrepreneurs, covering creative business structures, branding and online identity, an online business toolkit, Wordpress, Paypal, and a Social Media Masterclass in the afternoon. The mindmaps of the presentations have been published under a Creative Commons license and can be found at Mohawk Media to share or download. I had a day back in Wellington before heading to Christchurch on the Monday for a lecture at the New Zealand's Broadcasting School. I talked about the future of media work and learning, the challenges, opportunities, skills and attributes the students were going to need when they graduated and the the top ten tools in my online media toolkit. Driving in from the airport you would ardly guess that there had been an earthquake, but on the way back I passed the central area which is devastated. There were no aftershocks while I visited but Cantabrians are dealing with them almost every day.

The final trip of the month was back to Auckland for a keynote at the annual Wai Care Expo for the organisers, water testers, and volunteers who help keep the waterways clean and have planted over 25,000 trees in the Auckland region. Afterwards I headed north to stay in Leigh for a long weekend with great friends, fantastic food, Fejioa bubbles from Lothlorien, and sea views.

Sunday brunch was spent at the nearby Torkington homestead working through mounds of sausage, bacon, kumara, potatoes in US style portions, though I was informed that it wasn't a full brunch as there weren't any scones or pancakes. I whiled away the rest of the weekend reading Vanity Fair before flying home feeling relaxed and well fed.

I've enjoyed my adventures around New Zealand but am happy to be home in Wellington for the next couple of months before my trip to Melbourne in July to run another workshop for People in Your Neighbourhood. I'll be starting a Teaching Fellowship at Victoria University next month covering Identity on the Internet alongside Kelly Cheesman (AKA VJ Kellective). I'm looking forward to being back in the Red Shed which is what the locals call the school of Architecture & Design which happens to be next door to the studio. I can't complain about the commute it's a mere three minutes from apartment to the lecture hall.

Kinect Hacks in the field

One of the best things I have ever bought is an XBox Kinect, it has made me jump around the living room and it's also a fun toy to hack for all manner of Kinect Hacks. We recently bought a second Kinect camera to tinker with in the Mohawk Media studio. Last weekend we took it to an outdoor event outside Wellington to literally test it in the field for driving a live VJ show. It was fun watching people play with the interface, and I can't wait to try it in a live club installation.

An Inspiring Start to 2011

What an incredible start to the year, two days in Auckland running workshops at Colab followed by the Inspired Impact education conference. I flew up on Sunday to be hit with a wall of heat, after a year in windy Wellington I had forgotten just how steamy Auckland can get in the summer.

I was staying at the Vice Chancellors apartment at AUT, which is on the top floor of the halls of residence. It was quiet for the first night before excited packs of freshers arrived all wide eyed with the prospect of living away from home for the first time. My first workshop was on Publishing with Wordpress followed by a Social Media Masterclass, where half of the attendees were from a well known major record label. They must have liked what they heard as they all then signed up for the Mobile Media workshop I was running the following morning.

Later that evening I went to the opening of the Diana Eng show with wearable electronics, and inflatable garments made during Colab Summer School workshops. I found out later Diana was on the second series of Project Runway and you can see an interview with some of her work in Beauty and the Geek. I'm keen to get my craft station set up in the studio soon so that I can start to make some smart clothing and maybe a robot or two.

It was back to Wellington for a night at home before I jumped on a tiny 19 seater plane to Palmerston North for the Inspired Impact education conference. I was staying at the Hotel Coachman which is lovely, with super deep spa baths you can float in and ....drum roll.. free Wifi. It was wonderful to be able to check my mail, the twitterverse and do a final run through of my keynote from the comfort of my room without having to ask for a LAN cable or pay an exorbitant connection charge.

The conference kicked off with a thought provoking and hugely enjoyable speech from Sir Ken Robinson, who unfortunately could not make it in person but instead beamed in from LA via satellite connection. After watching both of his inspiring speeches from TED Talks, it was thrill to be hearing him speak live and also rather terrifying as I was going to have to follow his polished performance with my own keynote the next morning.

The day was filled by two more excellent speeches from Kath Murdoch and Bruce Hammonds, with breakout workshops in between on topics like the art of teaching science, the magic of visual arts and using open source tools to promote achievement. I enjoyed an excellent meal back at the hotel that night before retiring early as I was opening the conference the next morning.

My keynote on Engaging Digital Natives seemed to go down well, I shared my own unique learning pathway and talked about creative attitudes, space and time. The challenges we face educating New Leonardos for jobs that haven't been invented yet, and the flexible minds we need to develop in an attempt to future-proof our thinking.

I finished the day off by running a couple of workshops on mobile, streaming and remixable media. It was an honour to be invited to speak at such an amazing event, and I am always filled with such hope for the future when I go to education conferences. With over 1400 passionate teachers and over 80 workshops for exchanging knowledge and ideas, it was a wonderful gathering of awe-inspiring people.

Summer in the South Pacific

It's been nearly a year since we moved to Wellington and I am thoroughly enjoying living here. Summer has been cooler and less humid than Auckland with no mosquitos and fresh seas breezes. I love being a ten minute walk away from work, friends and play. Living on Cuba Street is great with funky cafes and bars right on our doorstep.

It's been a good start to this year with plenty of fun projects ahead. I'm writing up all of my columns and lectures into a book format which I'll be self publishing in a few months. We'll be relaunching the g33k show soon with new animated characters, until then I'm going to enjoy the summer sun and soak up the atmosphere in Wellington.

Stress Free Summer

I'm now happily car-free and taking the summer off before we move to Wellington in a couple of months. I'm really looking forward to living in the city centre again with everything on our doorstep.

For now we're shopping online and it's been compeletely stress free, with no traffic or parking hassles. I've had a car for nearly twenty years but from now on we're going to try hiring as we go. I've booked a Wicked Camper for Kiwi Foo Camp in February, and we'll get something big and comfy for the move south later this summer.

Until then I am happy to kick back and enjoy the balmy weather, sort through my fabric stash and dust off the sewing machine. Happy holidays New Zealand.

B1LB0 the much loved Mohawk Media-mobile has been sold. The crew are moving to Wellington and won't need wheels in the Kiwi capital. B1LB0 is a 2006 black VW Beetle, with less than 21,000 kms on the clock, and with the Hobbit currently being filmed one of the coolest number plates in New Zealand!

The VW Beetle has sold but we kept the plate so you never know, B1LB0 may be back...

I joined Oliver Driver, Carly Flynn, Jack Driver, and the Sunrise crew on TV3 last week commenting on the new proposals for revisions to New Zealand Copyright law.

I still think as an artist and rightsholder that internet termination is a step too far, as it undermines the basic human right to freedom of speech, but having the Copyright Tribunal handle cases is a much better solution than before.

Artist at Heart

Times of transition are always exciting, and this time I'm moving forward by going back to doing things I love. Like animating, sewing and radio where I can say what I think and play what I want. I'm learning new digital tools as I want to start making artwork for our walls, and am entering my author, animator, and full time artist era. After years of teaching or writing about art, business and technology I finally have some time to to be creative myself.

This is the first time in years that I have an opportunity to add layers to our space, as we settle in to start running the Twisted Radio & TV station from our studios for the next few years. If all goes well we will be back on air next month with new shows and a kickass new website using Silverstripe.

Chelfyn is mixing up a VJ show for Sebastian Wild's set for Kinky Slinky at Studio with Lee Haslam, Kyle Bourke (Live), Justin Sane, Crisis and other local DJs. I have just printed the first draft of my book for proofing before I start scanning photos and crew passes from the past 20 years . The book is called Misfits & MsBehaviour and is about my crazy journey from New Zealand to the UK and back again. I'm tired of telling my story to people as I know the plot backwards, so I thought I'd write it all down and let them read if for themselves if they are interested.

Best of all is I finally have the time this month to turn the MsBehaviour Files into an animated series while we re-build Twisted. We played around with some fun animation techniques while making the g33k show last year which I'm going to use to turn my columns for the Big Idea into virtual tours for creative entrepreneurs.

So my intention is to be Making and Crafting as much as I can from this year. My heart's desire right now is a 3D printer in my studio so I can print the things in my head. I'm having more fun right now than I have in a long time.

The Great Geek Off

It has been a busy week. On Tuesday I be-dreaded the Mistress who decided that she finally had enough of her red dreadlocks. We took some pictures as I chipped into it, and because I cut on the diagonal, her new choppy crop looks really good. I often colour our crew's hair, but it's the first time I have done a haircut in years.

I gave a three hour lecture on Wednesday morning to the film & TV students at Unitec on emerging technologies and their social implications. For the lecture I used a mindmap with links and it was interesting to hear their perspectives on what I talked about and how it affected their future careers.

After the lecture I headed back to the studios to pick up Chelfyn, and then into town for the Virtual World show on Radio New Zealand, National. Even though I was tired it was a fun show but the day still wasn't quite over.When I got back to the studios I still had to write and file my column for the Big Idea on Crowdfunding.

On Thursday morning I knocked up a presentation on 'Be Your Own Broadcaster' for the Great Orcon Blend in Auckland. I went to Toto to meet organisers Nat Torkington & Russell Brown for dinner along with the other contestants in the Great Geek Off which was the follow the Ignite presentations.

I attempted to stick to my strategy of one glass of wine before presenting as I was the first person on, but I immediately blew that plan and blame it entirely on Russell Brown. I kicked off the Ignite sessions with a 5 minute presentation on 'Be Your Own Broadcaster', talking about how we hacked together the g33k show last year, and how we are now using P2P & VJ tools to re-boot Twisted into a radio & video streaming station.

I managed to get a few laughs and finish in my allotted 5 minutes, then enjoyed listening to the other Ignite speakers. After a break it was time for the Geek Off between Team XX & XY. My LOLcat won the captions round, and I correctly identified a closeup image of Dr Manhattan's blue genitalia.

I couldn't remember T'Pol from Star Trek Enterprise full name but pointed out her hotness as an excuse and did remember the T & apostrophe bit. By the end of the Great Geek Off both teams tied equally at 320 points each, proving that boys and girls are equally geeky - just with different bits.

XMediaLab & Stomp in Auckland

May has been a bit of a blur this year, with our Twisted Radio takeover and the Auckland XMediaLab which I covered for The Big Idea on Twitter.

I joined the other mentors and project teams in the Labs over the weekend and stayed on Saturday night in the Hilton, after dinner and a performance from Stomp at the afterparty at Traffic Bar. The gig was organised by DJ Ginger Burns and The Twisted Mistress, as part of a series of live gigs at Traffic Bar on Saturday nights. The international guests were delighted to see the Stomp guys up close, and for many it was a highlight of their Auckland trip.

I'm now kicking back for a week until the Orcon Great Blend next Thursday night. I will be giving a 5 minute presentation on 'Be Your own Broadcaster' and will then be appearing in a quiz on the geek girl team.

After seven years being involved with the Twisted community in New Zealand, the Mohawk Media crew have taken over Twisted Radio. Chelfyn and I were at the the launch party of Twisted at an outdoor Potato Rave in 2002, and he was the first guest DJ on the Twisted radio stream, when the decks were still in someone's bedroom.

When Twisted started broadcasting on Auckland 107.7 fm in 2004, I started hosting the Friday Drive show which we then handed over to The Mistress, Twisted's breakfast show host later joined by DJ Martin Marshall.

After so many years helping out on air and behind the scenes, it's kind of right that we have inherited Twisted. Annie Lammas, the Twisted Mistress kicks off a new breakfast show, and the g33k show will be broadcasting weekly again soon on Twisted TV.

We'll be launching a new site, new shows and live studio sessions soon, so keep an eye out at Twisted.co.nz and on the Twisted NZ feed at twitter. You can also join our new Twisted Facebook Group.

I've been having a wonderful year so far with lots of creative projects on the go, and time off in the evening and at weekends to enjoy life. After working hard on Mohawk Media for five years I'm starting to feel like we have built a successful company and I don't have to be thinking about it or working on it 24/7.

Our secret to success has been staying small and flexible while the rest of the business world shakes out and we develop new business models. We downsized our house and life six years ago in preparation for this stage, and I am so glad that we resisted the urge to borrow lots of money or expand too large, too quickly.

It means that I don't have to worry whether our company will survive this year, and can focus on my creative projects and developing our 'Long Tail'. Just this week I have sold some items in my Zazzle store, and received a credit to our hosting affiliate account. Small trickles right now but together they add up.

I have almost finished the final draft of my book Misfits & MsBehaviour due to be published later this. The g33k show kicks off live at the end of May, and I will have some exciting news about the re-launch of Twisted.

A Well Misspent Youth

I'm glad I spent my twenties squeezing in mini-breaks to as many places as possible, now that travel is becoming a luxury. I visited seven countries the year I got married including a trip to New Zealand with stop-offs in the USA & Fiji. In 2001 I moved from the UK to the South Pacific to live permanently. Except for a visit back to the UK for my thirtieth birthday, I've only left New Zealand once for the XMedia Lab last year in Melbourne, Australia.

The others mentors on the circuit are jetsetters compared to me, but when you live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, it's hard to leave. Even though there are a few places in Asia that I'd still like to see, if I never leave New Zealand again I wouldn't feel sad about it. I have a lifetime of exploring my own country ahead of me, and sometimes the best things are to be found in your own back yard.

Tripping Out on Coffee?

I'm a tea fiend myself and rarely drink coffee. I'm also an atheist and can categorically state that I have never seen a ghost. In Latte with a ghost to go, please - Times Online covers the study of over caffeinated students to find that:

"People who drink more than the equivalent of seven cups of instant coffee a day are more likely to see things or hear voices, and even report sensing the spirits of the dead, researchers say. In a study of 200 students, those who consumed high amounts of caffeine were three times more likely to have heard a non-existent person’s voice than those who consumed less than one cup of instant coffee or its equivalent a day.

Dr Charles Fernyhough, co-author of the study, said that it only showed an association between caffeine intake and hallucination proneness, not a causal link."

I'm no longer surprised at the rise in Newage beliefs with most of the developed world fuelled by this drug, lack of sleep, stress all leading to a rise in cortisol levels. We all need to learn to slow down, and chill out.

NZ Net Access Denied

I just had a rather nasty shock from Xnet my NZ ISP who suspended our service late last night. Without any notice or explanation. One minute I am merrily mailing away, the next I am cut off for eight hours until their support team started this morning.

Apparently we have been sent two Bittorrent warnings of copyright infringement from the USA, one for a game I have never even played. We do have a wifi network that friends hook into, but I don't police it or check what they do while they are here.

When I spoke to Xnet's head of technical I was told that two email warnings had been sent and therefore we were under suspension. When I dug further I found that these emails had been sent to the Xnet email address that we never check, and they can see on their system that the emails had never been opened. If had known about the first 'infringement' I could have taken steps to make sure it never happened again.

When I queried why they can sent receipts to my Gmail address but not these vital notices, I was told that a system for forwarding emails on to the primary email address on the account had only been set up last week. So they sent mails that they can tell we never got, did not inform us by letter or phone and then they just cut us off. Looking around I'm not the only person to have experienced this. In this blog 'XNET are Spineless and Uncaring' another geek was unceremoniously booted offline after 8 p.m. and the technical department have gone home.

Xnet are not the only NZ ISP who are having to police the internet for the US entertainment industry. My issue is the way it was dealt with. If you are going to cut people off then at least do it while there is a support team available for them to deal with it. Also make sure you clearly inform customers if there is an issue and give them a chance to respond to it.

Internet access is not like a SKY subscription that you can easily live without. My whole business relies on it and this in effect shut us down for a whole night. As for whether we were actually in breach of copyright I have no idea.

The RIAA music lawsuits proved many false positives such as suing people that are dead or don't have a computer. A New Zealand Herald article also reports on a University of Washington study has shown how easy it is to fake malicious US infringement notices.

"Practically any Internet user can be framed for copyright infringement today. By profiling copyright enforcement in the popular BitTorrent file sharing system, we were able to generate hundreds of real DMCA takedown notices for computers at the University of Washington that never downloaded nor shared any content whatsoever.

Further, we were able to remotely generate complaints for nonsense devices including several printers and a (non-NAT) wireless access point. Our results demonstrate several simple techniques that a malicious user could use to frame arbitrary network endpoints. "

All I know is this morning I experienced the blind terror of a geek facing life disconnected from my friends, banking, business and career. With no right to reply or way of proving my innocence in New Zealand, apart from writing to a US Entertainment company, or going to court to prove my innocence. How on earth did we come to this?

This new law is due to come into effect on the 28th February in New Zealand. A group of artists and musicians have set up the Creative Freedom Foundation to fight this, and there is also a Facebook group that you can join.

Update

Mathew Holloway the Facebook group leader has posted a comment from MP Peter Dunne, to show that thankfully the message is reaching the government.

"I too am concerned about the potential breadth of these provisions that has been revealed and the implications for freedom of speech. It appears to go well beyond what was originally intended to be the scope of this legislation. I note that the government has now indicated that it will review this situation, and I will certainly be supporting that, with a view to removing the threat that the provision as it stands contains."

No Marketing Required

I came up with another answer to get rid of a telemarketer, who just called and asked to speak to the Mohawk Media Marketing Manager. I told him truthfully, that we don't have a marketing department let alone a manager of one as we don't need one. When he asked why, I said "we do radio shows instead of marketing"

After all the main point of marketing is for people to have heard of you, and with six national shows a month on Kiwi FM and Radio New Zealand there's no need for us to spend money on advertising. I also blog, podcast, write columns and speak at conferences to raise our profile. That's how a modern company does marketing.

Underacheiver and proud of it!

I never thought I'd hear myself say this but I agree with Bart Simpson. I'm an under achiever and proud of it. I didn't go to university or pursue highly paid positions, but using different metrics such as creativity & social enterprise I am a total over achiever. Having disappointed a few people over the years with my alternative choice of careers I was amused to read this in an essay by James Deslisle on underachievers:

"The best description I ever heard of the word "lazy" is "people who are not motivated in ways you want them to be." He goes on to add "Underachievement is an adult term used to describe a set of troublesome child behaviors that don't match some preconceived notions of how high a gifted child is supposed to perform."

That's right - 'perform' as in a trained monkey with an organ grinder setting the pace and beat. If you do one thing this year - find your passion projects and stick with them whatever the organ grinders dictate.

As Einstein said: "He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt."

Find your own pace of life and revel in it!

How to get rid of telemarketers

Working from a home studio has many advantages. My commute is incredibly short in the morning and I can wear a bikini to work in the summer. I can also choose whether Mohawk Manor is a place of work or play when I telemarketer calls.

If they ask to speak to someone with a corporate sounding job title then I tell them that this is a residential line. If they ask to speak to the homeowner then I tell them that this is a business line. The result is that you are immediately moved from their list, or scramble the database if another department calls later. If the call is about a survey then I tell them that this is our studio line and we need it free to take calls from listeners.

I loathe phones. I detest their shrill interruptions into my peaceful day and prefer to book times for calls first by email. I am not of the generation that is programmed to drop everything to answer a ringing phone. I plan my time carefully and if I'm in flow time on work then your call will just have to wait.

If you want to sell me something then stop using poor cubicle rats in call centres to read me a one-size-fits-all script in the vain hope that I may want, need or can afford what you are peddling. For here's one cast iron guarantee - if you ever get to me on a sales call then you will never get my money.

Design It Yourself

It's a common misconception that geeks aren't creative and that they spend all their spare time in World of Warcraft. All the geeks I know are what I call Leonardos. One day they may be working on a website, and the next they are painting, making music, or taking photos.

One of my favourite things about the long New Zealand summer break is time to play around with being creative. To make things for fun and to learn new skills, rather than producing things for a purpose. Time out to make things I love and will want to keep, and clear out things I never use.

We're having a geeky / crafty weekend at Mohawk Manor. Chelfyn is playing with Python making mobile apps, and I have my sewing machine and materials stash out. This summer I'm in need of some hats, so I think I'll start by copying my favourite black cord cap in some denim patchwork. I've also got a reversible bag design in my head and fancy trying out a bit of felting.

If you want to get crafty yourself then why not join the Craftster community. There are plenty of projects to get you inspired and on the road to Designing It Yourself.

Eccentrics Live Longer and are Happier

Author David Weeks states that eccentrics live longer, are healthier and happier than people living under the illusion of 'normality'.

"It's a combination of an optimistic outlook and low stress, due to the fact that eccentrics don't feel the need to conform. Eccentrics don't give a hoot what the rest of the world thinks of them; if someone makes-fun of them, instead of getting angry or embarrassed, they regard the other person as the one with a problem. In fact, eccentrics revel in the fact that they make people laugh."

Which is excellent news for me, as I plan on devoting the rest of my long life developing my eccentricities to their full extent. I will continue to wear odd clothing, keep strange hours and live the life of a carefree artist. So children point at the funny lady with the purple hair, but they always do it with a smile.

They know that I'm having just as much fun as they are.

Wednesday is usually a long day at the Mohawk Media studios. This morning Chelfyn took the early shift and talked to Wammo about Memes on the Kiwi Fm breakfast show, while I slept in after a last night redesigning my blog. We're now recording this week's g33k show, it's almost midnight and we are still going strong. These are a few development shots showing variable geometry andmorphing texture maps. One of those texture maps (mine, of course), hasbeen repainted in Zbrush at much higher resolution.

I'm still modelling the nose to get that right, and I have quite a bit of work left on thefacial animation system, but it's starting to look ok. Deep in theuncanny valley, yes, but one day I will climb out the other end. If Ijust keep plodding onwards I'll get there eventually.

It has been five years since we got back from the UK, with a grand plan to launch a digital label. On August 1st we launch the g33k show our very own DIY TV show.

While the first g33k show airs live in New Zealand on Alt TV, Chelfyn and I will be in Melbourne for the next XMedia Lab. Which just happens to be on the subject of “DIY TV”: Video, UGC, Mobile and IP TV content. The lineup of digital media experts is amazing, and I'm honoured to be speaking alongside them.

Pot & Gaming Saves Brains

A one year clinical study by the Dutch has shown that a combo of marijuna and gaming can stave off Alzheimers.

"40 test subjects in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease were put through 7 increasingly tougher video game challenges with and without the inclusion of medical marijuana. Each video game challenge was repeated daily for a number of weeks until the test subject could complete the test within the set time limit.

Scientists determined that the control group that was administered medical marijuana retained a 43% greater memory retention as compared to the other test group. “It was a far greater benefit to the marijuana administered group than we could have imagined”, said test organizer Ewoud Joost."
